Status

Metro, in partnership with Caltrans, is pleased to announce the completion of the SB I-605 South St Off-Ramp Improvements Project. The new off-ramp configuration provides two dedicated turning lanes for each movement of traffic at the South St intersection.  The improvements provided by the project are designed to enhance safety by reducing rear-end collisions with merging traffic, ease congestion, and improve mobility and traffic flow on the mainline and on the off-ramp by increasing queuing for vehicles exiting.

In addition, the project delivers additional safety enhancements at the off-ramp and the South St intersection, which includes the following:
    • High visibility crosswalks with wider pavement striping at South St making it safer for pedestrians.
    • Upgraded street lighting enhancing visibility and safety for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles.
    • New ADA-compliant curb ramp at the off-ramp intersection.
    • Signal timing optimization to improve traffic flow at the SB off-ramp and South St for more efficient movement of vehicles.
    • Yellow borders added to traffic signals for improved visibility and safety.
This project is among the initiatives funded by Measure R, supported and approved by LA County voters in 2008. Metro appreciates the community’s patience and support throughout the duration of this project.

Frequently Asked Questions

What stage is the project in now?

Construction is underway, with retaining wall and drainage work complete. Final paving and intersection upgrades are planned for summer 2025.

How will pedestrian safety be improved?

New striped crosswalks, better lighting, and ADA-compliant ramps make crossing the ramp safer for pedestrians.

What is the retaining wall for?

The wall prevents slope erosion, protects drainage, and enables safe reconfiguration of the ramp.

Why was this location chosen?

The off-ramp had high crash rates and congestion. These improvements reduce backups and enhance safety for all travelers.
