Imagine getting across Los Angeles faster and more reliably. Metro’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) study is exploring the potential to bring quicker, cleaner and more reliable bus service to three key corridors: Broadway, Atlantic, and Venice Boulevards.

BRT can make everyday trips faster and more convenient, connecting you to jobs, schools, shopping and more. Building on the 2020 BRT Vision & Principles Study, which identified these corridors as strong candidates for dedicated BRT service, Metro is taking the next step with the Countywide BRT Technical Study. Together with community members and local organizations, Metro will look at design options that fit each neighborhood, while reviewing traffic patterns, station spacing and community needs. The goal: to deliver high-quality transit improvements where they’re needed most.

Timeline

2016

Measure M

Measure M is approved by voters. It includes funding for the Countywide BRT Technical Study, prioritizing BRT implementation by 2028 and allocating rail conversion funding after 2067.

2016
Summer - Fall 2025

Develop and screen preliminary BRT concepts

Preliminary BRT concepts will be developed and screened to identify viable options for further evaluation and refinement.
Summer - Fall 2025
Winter 2025 - Spring 2026

Additional design for top BRT concepts

Design work will advance the top BRT concepts, with two concepts per corridor developed to a five percent conceptual design level. This added detail will support comparison of benefits, costs, and impacts and help inform next steps.

Winter 2025 - Spring 2026
Summer - Winter 2026

Evaluate remaining BRT concepts

The remaining BRT concepts will be evaluated based on their benefits, costs, and potential impacts to support informed decision making and concept selection.

Summer - Winter 2026
Spring 2027

Final recommendations for BRT implementation

The planning team will recommend moving forward with one corridor with one BRT concept for the environmental clearance phase. This focused approach will simplify the process, reduce complexity, and support a more efficient and timely review.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is BRT?
BRT combines the speed of light rail with the flexibility of a bus but costs a lot less to construct and can start running much sooner. Key attributes include:
  • Improved stations featuring passenger amenities: shelters, lighting, trash bins and real-time arrival information
  • More frequent, safe and reliable service
  • Dedicated bus lanes that keep buses moving, even in traffic
  • Transit signal priority
  • Electric buses that are quiet and environmentally friendly
  • All-door boarding for faster passenger loading
What is the purpose of this Technical Study ?
Over the course of this Countywide BRT Technical Study, Metro will craft corridor‑specific BRT concepts that reflect each area’s unique character and transit demand. Metro will collaborate closely with local community-based organizations and key stakeholders during every study phase to ensure equitable representation and meaningful input. We want your voice to shape the future of BRT. Join us at workshops, complete surveys and share your ideas online. Together, we’ll design faster, more reliable transit that works for that individual neighborhood. All feedback will directly inform the design and guide the project forward.

Goals & Objectives
  1. Identify mobility challenges along each corridor
  2. Engage community stakeholders to build consensus
  3. Develop tailored BRT concepts for each corridor
  4. Prioritize implementation strategies based on effectiveness, cost, impacts and community support
What corridors are being studied?
Broadway Corridor (9.5 mi)
Serving historic neighborhoods like South Park and the Broadway Theater District, this corridor is a cultural hub of South LA.

Atlantic Corridor (19 mi)
Connecting vibrant Eastside and South LA communities to Downtown Long Beach.

Venice Corridor (14 mi)
Linking Venice Beach to Downtown LA through some of the city’s most active neighborhoods.
Will all three corridors get BRT?

No. Based on the data collected during this study the most feasible corridor will be chosen.
