Upgrades include:
- A new 0.86-mile auxiliary lane
- Bridge widenings at Atlantic Av, Myrtle Av, Orange Av, and Walnut Av
- Reconstructed soundwalls
- Realignment of ramps to improve merging and reduce bottlenecks
As an early action project under the I-605 Corridor “Hot Spots” program, this work is part of a broader effort to address traffic challenges in the region. The $174 million project is funded through Senate Bill 1 (TCEP), Measure R, and other local sources.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why was this area selected for improvements?
Collision rates along this section of SR-91 have been up to 107% higher than the statewide average. Adding a dedicated auxiliary lane will help reduce congestion-related collisions and create a safer driving environment.
Will soundwalls be added or changed?
Yes. Existing soundwalls will be demolished and reconstructed farther from the freeway to accommodate the auxiliary lane. The new soundwalls are designed to meet Caltrans Noise Abatement Criteria and will help reduce freeway noise for nearby neighborhoods.
How will this project affect pedestrian access to the areas under construction?
Pedestrian access—especially for students walking to Hamilton Middle School—will be maintained during construction. Closures under the freeway (like at Myrtle Avenue) will occur only during overnight hours and select weekends, with lighting and protection provided.
What time of day will construction take place, and how will it affect Cherry Avenue?
Construction will primarily occur overnight between 10 PM and 5 AM on weekdays, with some weekend work. Temporary closures on Cherry Avenue and surrounding streets will be clearly communicated in advance through notices, signs, and the project website. Access to local businesses will be maintained.
Will traffic through nearby neighborhoods increase?
No long-term increase in neighborhood traffic is expected. Any detours will be temporary and limited to overnight or weekend hours during specific construction activities.
