Eastbound SR-91 Atlantic Avenue to Cherry Avenue Auxiliary Lane Improvements Project Map
Metro, in partnership with Caltrans, is improving one of North Long Beach’s most hazardous freeway segments near the connection from southbound I-710 to eastbound SR-91. The project is designed to reduce crashes, ease congestion and improve conditions for both drivers and the surrounding neighborhoods. The project adds a new auxiliary lane enhance safety, reduce traffic incidents, and improve traffic flow for drivers along this heavily traveled corridor.

Upgrades include:
    • A new 0.86-mile auxiliary lane
    • Bridge widenings at Atlantic Av, Myrtle Av, Orange Av, and Walnut Av
    • Reconstructed soundwalls
    • Realignment of ramps to improve merging and reduce bottlenecks
As an early action project under the I-605 Corridor “Hot Spots” program, this work is part of a broader effort to address traffic challenges in the region. The $174 million project is funded through Senate Bill 1 (TCEP), Measure R, and other local sources.

Status Update

Metro is preparing to begin construction on safety improvements along the eastbound 91 Freeway between the I-710 connector and the Atlantic Avenue and Cherry Avenue corridor. The project is designed to reduce collisions, improve merging conditions, and support more reliable traffic flow for drivers traveling through this area. Visit the work notice.

Construction is expected to begin in Spring 2026 and will be completed in phases through 2029 to help minimize impacts to nearby communities, businesses, and freeway users. Initial activities will focus on traffic shifts and restriping to prepare the roadway for future improvements. Following this, work will include upgrades to on-ramps and off-ramps, removal and reconstruction of soundwalls, and bridge widening to accommodate a new auxiliary lane.

Most work will occur during weekday daytime hours, with some night and weekend work as needed. Temporary traffic adjustments will be in place during construction, and schedules may shift as work progresses.

Metro will continue coordinating closely with local jurisdictions and stakeholders to manage construction activities and reduce disruptions where possible, while maintaining progress on this critical safety improvement project.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why was this area selected for improvements?

Collision rates along this section of SR-91 have been up to 107% higher than the statewide average. The auxiliary lane will provide drivers with more space and time to merge, and the widened ramps will help minimize spill over to local streets, overall creating a safer driving environment.

Will soundwalls be added or changed?

Yes. Existing soundwalls will be demolished and reconstructed farther from the freeway to accommodate the auxiliary lane. The new soundwalls will be two feet taller and are designed to meet Caltrans Noise Abatement Criteria and will help reduce freeway noise for nearby neighborhoods.

How will this project affect pedestrian access to the areas under construction?

Pedestrian access—especially for students walking to Hamilton Middle School—will be maintained during construction.

What are the construction hours?
    • Work hours are expected to be Monday through Friday from 7:00am to 7:00pm.
    • Nightwork may occur from 8:00pm to 6:00am.
    • Saturday work may occur from 9:00am to 6:00pm, when needed.
    • No Sunday work may occur, except in emergencies and when pre-approved.
