Doran Street and Broadway/Brazil Grade Separation Project

The purpose of the Doran Street and Broadway/Brazil Grade Separation Project is to improve safety and mobility while maintaining suitable access to existing businesses and surrounding residential areas. The Doran Street and Broadway/Brazil at-grade rail crossings are critical to the Atwater Village community and provide a unique challenge of limited access, adjacent industrial uses, and a mix of business and residential interests.  In addition, the Doran Street at-grade rail crossing has been identified as one of the rail crossings in Los Angeles that would gain the most significant benefits from safety enhancements in Los Angeles County.

Proposed Improvements

Metro is currently proposing the Salem/Sperry Overpass, located at Salem Street in the City of Glendale to Sperry Street in the City of Los Angeles, connecting West San Fernando Road to San Fernando Road. In addition, a connector road that extends West San Fernando Road to the Fairmont Avenue bridge is also being considered as a secondary point of access for first responders and businesses in the area. The combination of these two access points will ultimately allow the closure of existing railroad at-grade crossings at Doran Street and Broadway/Brazil.

Interim Improvements

As envisioned, the Doran Street Crossing Interim Improvements will retrofit the crossing in the short-term to improve safety, including a modified at-grade roadway for two-way traffic with quiet zone-ready improvements.  On January 10 th , California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) granted Metro approval to modify the previously approved one-way (westbound) use only design due to unanimous concurrence and letters of support from the City of Glendale, the City of Los Angeles, the Southern California Regional Rail Authority and the Pelanconi Homeowners Association. With CPUC approval, Metro is targeting to have final design completed Spring 2019 to prepare for construction.

Additionally, the City of Glendale is working on Traffic Signal Modification improvements for Broadway/Brazil. It is anticipated that the City’s construction activity related to the traffic signal improvements is expected to start as early as March 2019 and end in approximately May/June 2019. The City of Glendale is the lead agency for the traffic signal-related improvements and will provide additional updates before starting their construction activity.

As envisioned, the interim improvements are anticipated to be performed in advance of the grade separation improvement planned as part of the Doran Street and Broadway/Brazil Grade Separation Project that will provide an overpass crossing at Salem Street/Sperry Street and extension of West San Fernando Road to Fairmont Avenue and allows the closure of the Doran Street and West Broadway/Brazil Street at-grade crossings. The project team is also evaluating potential active transportation connections within the study area.
