How to Ride Metro Rail
Metro rail is made up of six train lines, including 115 stations, each offering connections to Metro bus.

Metro’s rail service consists of the following lines:
A Line
Pomona to Long Beach
B Line
Union Station to North Hollywood
C Line
Norwalk to LAX/Metro Transit Center
D Line
Union Station to Wilshire/La Cienega
E Line
East Los Angeles to Santa Monica
K Line
Expo/Crenshaw to Redondo Beach
How to Pay, Board and Exit
- Arrive 10 minutes early for your train.
- Pay with a TAP, credit or debit card — physical or digital. Learn more about how to pay.
- Tap on the validator or turnstile to enter the station’s platform/waiting area.
- Stand behind the yellow line and wait for the train to make a complete stop. Let others exit before entering.
- Take a seat or use handrails/handholds. Don’t lean against the train doors.
Watch and listen for your stop. As you get closer to your destination, move towards the exiting doors. Wait for doors to open and exit, make sure you have all your belongings.

What is Allowed Onboard
Strollers: Look for the decal on the outside of the car denoting the designated space for passengers with strollers.
- Mobility Devices: All Metro Rail lines are accessible to persons in wheelchairs. See Metro’s Accessibility Guide for more information.
- Bikes: can be brought onto trains if space is available. Tandem, 3-wheeled or fuel powered bikes are not allowed.
Pets and emotional support, therapy, comfort, and companion animals: need to secured in enclosed carriers and cannot block the aisle or a doorway, or interfere with the comfort or convenience of other riders.
- Luggage: Luggage and other large items have a designated space on Metro Rail. The space is usually located at the end of rail cars and is marked with a yellow decal.
What is Not Allowed
There is no eating or drinking allowed on platforms or trains.
Smoking is not allowed within 20 feet of any Metro facility entrance, exit or operable window.
- Weapons, flammable materials and dangerous objects are prohibited on Metro.
In Case of an Earthquake
- Stay onboard the train or in the station unless Metro personnel give other instructions.
- The train operator will stop the train until the shaking stops, and keep you informed with announcements.
- Once it’s safe, the train will proceed to the next station.
- If the train cannot proceed and it’s not safe to remain where you are, the operators will assist with evacuation to a safe location.
