Overview

Metro’s plan to ease traffic and enhance safety on Interstate 105 (I-105) freeway includes the conversion of the existing High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane, or carpool lane, into two Metro Expresslanes in each direction on the I-105 freeway. Metro ExpressLanes are available for use by all motorists, as a toll-free option to carpools and buses and by paying a toll for single occupant drivers.

The I-105 ExpressLanes Project seeks to do the following:
    • Enhance freeway operations and safety by improving traffic flow and reducing stop and go conditions
    • Ease congestion by improving travel speeds on the ExpressLanes to meet the federal standard
    • Reduce freeway overflow traffic onto nearby city streets
    • Reinvest the revenue from the use of toll lanes on mobility improvements and transit projects in communities along the corridor

This Project expands the network of Metro ExpressLanes in LA County and provides direct access and connection to the I-110 Metro ExpressLanes, helping to reduce congestion, improve travel efficiency and enhance highway safety. Construction on Segment 1—from Sepulveda Blvd to Central Avenue—is underway and expected to open to traffic in 2028. Construction for Segment 2 (Central Av to I-710) and Segment 3 (I-710 to Studebaker Rd) is anticipated to begin in mid 2026 and be completed in 2029.

City Street Closures

As part of continuing construction, work crews anticipate the implementation of a series of full street closures to support the reconstruction of several underpasses along the corridor to perform new roadway pavement construction to accommodate the new ExpressLanes and project improvements on the freeway. The series of closures are anticipated to be implemented during the nighttime hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

What areas are affected by the I-105 ExpressLanes Project?

The project extends from Sepulveda Bl to Studebaker Rd/I-605, with current construction focused on Segment 1 between Sepulveda Bl and Central Av.

Will there be tolls?

Yes. The ExpressLanes will operate similarly to the I-10 and I-110 lanes, with variable tolls based on congestion. Carpoolers with a transponder ride free.

How are toll revenues used?

Revenues fund operations, safety services, and are reinvested into the corridor through grants for transit, active transportation and roadway projects.

Will general traffic lanes be affected?

General lanes will remain, but lane closures and restriping will occur during construction. ExpressLanes are designed to reduce congestion overall.
