Link Union Station (Link US) will modernize Los Angeles Union Station (LAUS)—the busiest transit hub in the western U.S. Currently a terminus, Union Station will get upgrades including new run-through tracks, as well as a wider passenger concourse and platform improvements. As envisioned, these changes will reduce train idling, increase capacity and support high-speed rail service. With over 100,000 passengers using Union Station daily—and regional travel expected to double by 2040—Link US will create a more reliable, accessible and connected transit experience. The project also includes enhancements for pedestrians, updated station amenities and easier transfers between rail, light rail and bus services. By improving this critical Southern California transportation hub, Link US strengthens access to jobs, housing and essential services across the region while helping meet long-term environmental and equity goals.

What is the current train routing at Union Station?

Los Angeles Union Station is a “stub-end” terminal, which means trains must enter and then reverse to leave the station. This limits the number of trains the station can handle and contributes to delays. The Link Union Station project will create new run-through tracks, allowing trains to pass directly through the station—improving speed, efficiency and regional connectivity.

How will Link US improve train operations?

Link US will modernize Union Station with new run-through tracks, expanded passenger areas and upgraded signal systems. These improvements will reduce train delays, improve service reliability and prepare the station for high-speed rail. The project also supports a growing transit network and strengthens regional mobility.

What changes are planned for the passenger concourse?

Metro will replace the underground walkway with a new, widened passenger concourse. The updates will include elevators, escalators, signage, retail and comfortable waiting areas—making it easier for all passengers, including those with disabilities, to move through the station.

What improvements are happening in the City of Vernon?

To support the Link US project and expanded passenger rail at Union Station, freight operations are being adjusted. New tracks will be added at Malabar Yard in Vernon, including a 1,000-foot connector along 46th Street. Metro and the California High-Speed Rail Authority will also close the 49th Street rail crossing to improve safety.

Why was Malabar Yard selected for freight rail upgrades?

Malabar Yard was chosen due to its size, proximity to the ports and ability to accommodate lost freight rail infrastructure near Union Station. The improvements allow passenger and freight rail to coexist while supporting future high-speed service.
