Low-Income Fare is Easy

The Low-Income Fare is Easy (LIFE) program provides transportation assistance to low-income individuals in Los Angeles County. LIFE offers fare subsidies that may be applied toward the purchase of Metroor any LIFE-participating operator pass or free regional ride options. Qualifying riders can save more on Metro 7-Day, 30-Day or toward fare on participating transit operators with LIFE benefits. LIFE benefits will be loaded directly onto TAP cards.

What are the eligibility guidelines?

Adult riders, Senior/Disabled, K-12 grade students and full time College/Vocational students are eligible if their incomes are:

1 $36,550 or less
2 $41,800 or less
3 $47,000 or less
4 $52,200 or less
5 $56,400 or less
6 $60,600 or less

Children over 5 years old whose parents qualify are automatically eligible to receive LIFE subsidies.

Individuals who receive transportation subsidies from city/county schools, employers or have an access card are not eligible to participate in the LIFE.

2. Apply

The administrator in your area will refer you to your local agency to submit your application.
Visit the agency in person to complete the application and provide a proof of income, a valid California ID and a TAP card to receive your coupon booklet.

3. Redeem

Use your coupon towards the purchase of a Metro 7-Day or 30-Day Pass, or towards fare on one of the participating transit agencies. Call 866.TAPTOGO or visit taptogo.net/vendors to find a vendor that redeems LIFE coupons.

On-site qualification approvals will be made at our enrollment events with a presentation of the following:

  • Valid TAP card
  • Government-issued ID
  • Proof of income (check stub, EBT Card, Medi-Cal, Social Security Award or tax return.)

Starting July 1, 2019 , LIFE benefits will no longer be distributed as paper coupons. All benefits will be loaded directly onto your TAP card.

To redeem LIFE subsidies with TAP : Take your registered LIFE TAP card to any TAP-participating vendor and load your fare option.

1. Visit taptogo.net
2. Create or log in to your account with your LIFE registered TAP card
3. Make your choice of the following Fare options

Fare options : You can choose to purchase or load one of the following options each month.

  • Discount on the purchase of four Metro 7-day passes or participating operator equivalent passes (see below)
  • Discount on the purchase of one discounted Metro 30-day pass or participating operator equivalent pass
  • One discounted EZ Pass (except Norwalk Transit)
  • 20 regional rides (the rides will be loaded on your TAP card with no purchase necessary)

Annual Re-enrollment

You will only have to re-enroll in the LIFE program at an agency once year. No need to visit an agency every six months.

Requirement to Enroll in the Program

Be sure to bring all of the following to your agency:

  • Valid picture ID
  • Proof of income (check stub, Medi-Cal, Lifeline, public benefit, tax return or free-reduced lunch)
  • Valid TAP card
  • Optional: Email address
