Students (K-12)
Students at participating K-12 schools can enjoy the freedom of going anywhere, anytime for FREE on Metro buses and trains. Check to see if your school has GoPass.
If your school doesn’t currently have GoPass, Reduced Fare TAP cards offer another way for K-12 students to save on fare.
How to get a Reduced Fare TAP card
TAP is a reloadable fare card that offers a flexible way to pay your fare on Metro. It’s also valid for travel with 25 transit agencies across LA County.
Coming in 2027: Reduced Fare program participants will be able to pay with their credit or debit card and receive a reduced fare.
Apply In Person
- Apply at a Metro Customer Center.
- Make sure you have the required documents and photo of yourself in the correct size.

- Gather your required photo and documents, and submit an Online Application for Students (K-12).
- Student K-12 TAP cards will be mailed to eligible applicants within 20 business days after verification has been completed.
How much does it cost for Students (K-12)?
Reduced fares for students only apply with a Reduced Fare TAP card.

Qualifying students never pay more than $2.50 a day or $6 within seven days. After that, all of your rides are free. Learn more about farecapping.
- Fare payment with TAP includes 2 hours of unlimited transfers to Metro rail and bus in one direction (no roundtrips).
- An additional charge for a transfer to non-Metro buses within 2.5 hours varies by transit agency, and requires Stored Value.
More ways for Students (K-12) to save on fare
LIFE Program
The Low Income Fare is Easy (LIFE) program provides qualifying riders with savings on fare when riding Metro and other participating transit across LA County. LIFE includes benefits such as 20 free rides every month, and more.
EZ Pass
If you frequently ride Metro in combination with other transit systems, EZ Pass could provide additional savings. EZ transit pass (zone 0) costs $110 per month, with the option to pay $22 for each additional zone.
