How does Metro manage its parking?

Metro operates 89 parking facilities serving 56 transit stations and totaling more than 25,000 parking spaces throughout Los Angeles County. Metro's parking facilities accommodate more than four million cars every year providing an important first/last mile connection for Metro patrons.

Recognizing that a well-planned and managed parking program will improve transit riders' experience, Metro created a new Parking Management team in 2014. This group was tasked with developing a comprehensive, proactive approach to manage Metro's parking resources, resulting in the Transit Supportive Parking Program. In 2015, the Metro Board adopted a Parking Ordinance to implement policy and regulations for managing Metro parking facilities.

Why does Metro need to charge for parking with all of the new funding from Measure M?

Parking maintenance and operations are not funded by any revenue from past ballot measure, including Measure M. Measure M funds are specifically earmarked to build a comprehensive and robust transit system for Los Angeles County. Learn more about Measure M and how the money is allocated at .

Are there parking projects in the pipeline?

Metro is working to build out its parking programs to better serve Metro riders. The implementation of a Parking Guidance System is currently underway. This Parking Guidance System will be capable of broadcasting real-time parking availability information via electronic media and programmable message signs at 84 Metro parking facilities. This is intended to help reduce transit patrons' time spent searching for an available parking space. Metro is also working to enhance older parking facilities throughout its system in order to improve its transit riders’ parking experience.

Can I leave my car in the parking lot overnight?

Yes, vehicles are able to stay parked for 72 consecutive hours while patrons are using the transit system.

What if I need to leave my car parked longer than 72 hours?

If you need to park longer than 72 hours, a permit must be obtained. You can start that process by filling out the Extended Permit Authorization Form, located on . Once completed you can email the form to for processing.

Why is Metro charging for parking at some of its facilities?

Finding parking at some of Metro's busiest stations has become a challenge for transit riders. Paid parking will help Metro to better manage parking demand at these stations and reserve parking for transit riders. Parking Management Pilot Program facilities were selected based on capacity, location, utilization and recent parking facility assessment findings.

How does Metro decide how much to charge for parking?

Metro extensively studied factors like parking supply and demand, commuting costs, operating and maintenance costs for parking facilities, and rates of nearby parking to develop Metro's parking fees. The daily parking rates are comparatively low considering all of these factors. In addition, transit use is required to park.

For example, monthly parking in downtown Los Angeles ranges from $200 to $250 per month. Even with a $3 parking fee at Metro parking lots, the average downtown commuter paying for parking and gas could save approximately 40%, without factoring in wear and tear to their vehicle, insurance and extra time spent in traffic.

Where can I find free parking near Metro stations?

Metro will continue to offer free parking at stations with less parking demand.

I have a monthly parking permit. Does that mean I have to pay for daily parking in addition to my monthly parking permit?

No, if you have a monthly parking permit you do not need to pay for daily parking. Your current monthly permit will convert to be compatible with the new systems, with no further charges.

Are Electric Vehicle (EV) owners exempt from the new parking charges?

No Parking fees are separate from any costs that EV owners pay for using charge stations at Metro parking facilities.

Are motorcycle riders exempt from parking charges?

No. Parking fees apply to all vehicles, including motorcycles.

Do Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) placard holders need to pay for parking?

Yes, ADA placard holders will still need to pay parking fees. The California Vehicle Code only governs on-street parking, and Metro parking facilities are off-street parking facilities. Therefore, all parking patrons, including holders of ADA placards, will be required to pay parking fees at Metro stations that have paid parking. Metro's disabled parking spaces will continue to be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Is there a parking discount for carpools?

Yes, Metro has created a discounted monthly parking carpool permit option. This program is intended to encourage Metro riders to share parking resources to reduce traffic congestion. The carpool parking permit requires three TAP cards and three license plates to be registered, with one car allowed to park per day.

Do Metro employees need to pay for parking?

The Metro Board-approved program requires all transit users, including Metro employees, to pay the same parking fees. Metro employees can use their ID badge for TAP card verification, but not to pay for parking.

How do I pay for daily parking?

You can pay your daily parking in any of the following three ways:

  • By using the new Metro Parking mobile app payment option.

No, payment for parking is done separately from fare payment.

Is there monthly parking available at all Metro stations?

Monthly parking permits are available at 22 Metro stations. Monthly and daily parking permits are issued on a first-come, first-served basis. Why isn’t South Pasadena available for purchase on your website?

Where does the parking fee revenue go?

Revenue from the new parking fees goes to Metro's General Fund, where it contributes to Metro's efforts to proactively operate and maintain parking facilities.

If I have a Metrolink pass, can I still park at a Metro Station?

The Metrolink monthly pass can be used at the parking pay kiosk at Metro stations. Instead of tapping your TAP card, you can tap your Metrolink monthly pass, and it will register. The Metrolink pass cannot currently be registered on the mobile app, so you have to pay using the pay kiosk.

I have a new car and am still waiting for my new license plates from the DMV. I can’t enter a license plate number in the pay station kiosk. Will I be cited?

You will not be cited for having dealership plates. When prompted by the pay station kiosk to enter your license plate number, please enter the last five digits of your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). You will need to update the information for your vehicle once you have your new license plates.

What time do the permit spaces open to other transit patrons?

Permit spaces at La Cienega/Jefferson, Sierra Madre, Monrovia, Irwindale, Azusa Downtown, Fillmore, Balboa, North Hollywood and Universal City are reserved until 10 am, Monday - Friday.

Florence, Artesia, Del Amo, Wardlow, Willow, Atlantic, Indiana, Lincoln/Cypress, Heritage Square and Lake Ave have reserved spaces until 11 am, Monday – Friday.

Expo/Bundy requires a permit 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. 17 th St/SMC and Expo/Sepulveda have permit spaces reserved until 9 am, Monday – Friday.

All transit patrons are able to utilize the reserved spaces after these times and all day on Saturday and Sunday.

Can a monthly permit be linked to multiple TAP cards that total usage of 10 days per month?

What if I don’t have a TAP card to register for a monthly permit?

A valid TAP card is required to purchase and maintain a monthly permit. Please purchase a reloadable TAP card and then register online at . Transit ridership verification is performed monthly on all accounts.

What if I don’t have a TAP card when paying for daily parking?

A valid TAP card is required to park in the parking facilities. Please purchase a reloadable TAP card to use on the transit system. Transit ridership verification is performed at the time of the parking transaction.

As a Metro employee, what number do I use as my TAP card number when paying for daily parking or when registering for monthly parking?

Metro employees should enter their Employee Badge number.

Can I place my monthly permit on hold?

What if I do not use my TAP card 10 days every month? Will I lose my permit?

We understand that, on occasion, permit holders will encounter situations that will limit the monthly use of their TAP card (i.e. medical, vacation, business travel, etc.). Is the TAP card eligibility requirement 10 one-way transactions or 10 daily transactions?

The requirement is that the registered TAP card must be used on 10 separate calendar days during the month.

Is there a reduced fare card that customers utilize to ride transit? If so, can that be used as a TAP card?

There are several different types of TAP cards (regular, reduced fare, student, college, etc.) which all qualify for this program.

What if I use more than one TAP card? Will I be able to register more than one card in my monthly parking account?

Only one TAP card can be registered at a time. You can manage your TAP card number, along with your personal information, by logging into your account at

When will paid parking be coming to the Green Line?

Aviation/LAX, Crenshaw, Lakewood and Norwalk parking facilities are included in the approved Parking Management Pilot Program locations. The program will be implemented at these locations in Spring/Summer 2018.
