Beyond Recycling - Upcycling

Innovation Submissions Due September 17th

As a creative approach to reusing products, upcycling extends the product lifecycle, reduces waste and uses resources more efficiently. Upcycling creates useful materials in ways that use less energy than traditional recycling or what would be required to extract raw resources.

Metro’s Banners to Bags Program has been collecting the agency’s used vinyl signage and transforming them into tote bags since 2017 to distribute at events. As the program expands beyond Metro’s operational facilities to include our construction projects, we want to do more.

Metro is hosting a series of conversations on resiliency concepts and solutions.

As a part of the series, we’re looking for manufacturing and design innovators to help us identify materials in our current waste stream that could be repurposed or upcycled. Our goal is to reduce the amount of material sent to landfill from our facilities and construction projects.
