Rosecrans/Marquardt Grade Separation

  • Status : Construction
  • Timeline : November 2019 - June 2023
  • Projected Cost : $156.4 Million

The Rosecrans/Marquardt Grade Separation Project will improve the safety and track flow of the Rosecrans Av/ Marquardt Av intersection. Located in the City of Santa Fe Springs, the Rosecrans/Marquardt grade crossing is traversed by more than 112 freight and passenger trains, and 45,000 vehicles in a 24-hour period. With such heavy through traffic, this intersection has been identified by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) as one of the most hazardous grade crossing in the state. Providing a grade separation will significantly improve safety, eliminate delays and enhance the environment.

This is a project of regional and national significance to passenger and freight rail traffic.  The proposed project will grade separate this intersection from the existing diagonal at-grade crossing and substantially enhance the safety and traffic flow on surface streets. It will also improve the efficiency of train movements along the rail corridor. The project will also have the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by reducing vehicle idling through the elimination of railroad gates made possible by grade separation.

This project is led by Metro in cooperation with the City of Santa Fe Springs, City of La Mirada, Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) Railway, California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), Amtrak, California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), Metrolink and California High-Speed Rail Authority (CHSRA).
