Metrolink Station Relocation Feasibility Studies

In March 2016, the Metro Board of Directors unanimously approved a motion to examine the feasibility of relocating three existing Metrolink stations and creating a new Metrolink station at the base of Rio Hondo College. The three existing stations under study are the Northridge, El Monte, and Montebello/Commerce stations.

Northridge Station Relocation Feasibility Study

Metro is conducting a feasibility study to identify potential opportunities to improve connectivity and usage of the Northridge Metrolink station. The goal of this feasibility study is to identify opportunities to:

  • Maximize rail-to-bus connectivity
  • Improve active transportation connections
  • Maximize the use of the station with Transit Oriented Communities and other land use opportunities

To achieve these objectives, two alternatives are being studied:
Alternative 1 – relocate the station to Reseda Boulevard
Alternative 2 – enhance the existing station at its current location to a multimodal hub

EL Monte Station Relocation Feasibility Study

The Metrolink El Monte Station is located on the Metrolink San Bernardino Line, the busiest line on the Metrolink system. The Metrolink El Monte Train Station is located approximately three-quarters of a mile from the Metro El Monte Bus Transit Center. The goal of the study is to identify opportunities to improve connectivity between the Metrolink Train Station and the Metro Bus Station.

Montebello /Commerce Station Relocation Feasibility Study

The Montebello/Commerce Metrolink Station is located on the Riverside Line that operates between Riverside and Los Angeles. The Station is located approximately 1.5 miles from the Citadel Outlets, a major economic driver. The goal of this study is to examine the feasibility of relocating the existing Commerce/Montebello Metrolink Station to provide a more direct connection with Citadel Outlets, which may likely promote transit usage and may reduce vehicle congestion in the surrounding area.

Feasibility of Creating a New Metrolink Station at Rio Hondo College

The Greater Whittier Narrows area is home to several regional destinations including Rio Hondo Community College, Rio Hondo Police and Fire Academy, Whittier Narrows Recreation facilities, and Rose Hills Cemetery. The stretch of the Metrolink Riverside Line through the area is one of the longest stretches of Metrolink track without a station - nearly 20 miles. The closest stations to Rio Hondo College are Montebello/Commerce to the west (approximately 7 miles), and Industry to the east (approximately 13 miles). The goal of this study is to examine the feasibility of creating a multimodal Metrolink Station at Rio Hondo College that may promote transit usage and potentially reduce vehicle trips in the area.
