Westwood/UCLA Station Monthly Look-Ahead for December

As part of the Federal government’s Coronavirus Guidance for America, transportation infrastructure is considered an “Essential Critical Infrastructure”. Additionally, transit capital projects are not subject to the State of California’s Stay at Home order, therefore Metro construction projects continue to progress.

Summary

This monthly notification is an outline of construction activities for the Westwood/UCLA Station during the month of December 2020. 

Additional notices detailing these activities will be sent by email through the Purple Line Extension, Section 3 database. 

Westwood Telecom Utility Relocation

Metro contractors are continuing excavation work to relocate telecommunications equipment in Westwood.  This work will require some temporary lane reductions, and access might be restricted. Please note posted signs and cones near construction zones, which will provide motorists and pedestrians safe, alternate routes for travel through the area.

Work Hours: 

  • Monday through Friday from 9pm to 6am
  • Weekends, Friday through Sunday, 9pm to 10am 

Traffic Control:

  • Intermittent lane reductions on Wilshire Blvd. between Glendon Ave. and Veteran Ave.
  • Intermittent lane reductions on Westwood Blvd. between Lindbrook Dr. and Ashton Ave.
  • Intermittent lane reductions on Gayley Ave. between Kinross Ave. and Ashton Ave.
  • Intermittent turn restrictions at the intersection of Wilshire Blvd. and Glendon Ave.
  • Intermittent turn restrictions at the intersection of Wilshire Blvd. and Westwood Blvd.
  • Intermittent turn restrictions at the intersection of Wilshire Blvd. and Gayley Ave.
  • Intermittent turn restrictions at the intersection of Wilshire Blvd. and Veteran Ave.
  • Intermittent sidewalk closures on Wilshire Blvd. between Gayley Ave. and Glendon Blvd.
  • Access to businesses will be maintained.

Subsurface Investigation Work on Wilshire Blvd. and Westwood Blvd.

Metro contractors will continue investigating subsurface conditions, also known as geotechnical investigations, around the future Westwood/UCLA Station. Investigations take 3 to 5 working days depending on each location.

  • Monday through Friday, 9am to 3:30pm

  • Intermittent lane reductions on Wilshire Blvd. between Glendon Ave. and Gayley Ave.
  • Intermittent lane reductions on Westwood Blvd. between Lindbrook Dr. and Ashton Ave.
  • Intermittent lane reductions on Gayley Ave. between Kinross Ave. and Ashton Ave.
  • Intermittent lane reduction on Veteran Ave. between Kinross Ave. and Ashton Ave.

Construction Fence Installation at UCLA Lot 36

Metro contractors will install additional fences at UCLA Lot 36 to protect students and UCLA affiliates, as well as our construction workers during project operations. Installation will require equipment such as a crane, forklift, and drill rig.  The temporary chain link fences will be replaced by construction walls once utility work on Lot 36 is complete.

Work Hours:

  • Monday through Friday, 7am to 5pm

Traffic Control:

  • This work has no impact to Gayley Ave. and Wilshire Blvd.
  • Temporary sidewalk closure adjacent to Lot 36 between Gayley Ave and Veteran Ave.

Well Monitoring on Wilshire Blvd.

Metro contractors will continue well monitoring on Wilshire Blvd. Hand equipment will be used at several locations to monitor the groundwater wells. Monitoring at each location will take approximately one hour. 

Work Hours: Monday through Sunday, 8pm to 6am

  • Intermittent lane reductions on Wilshire Blvd. between Malcolm Ave. and Veteran Ave.
  • Intermittent lane reductions on Westwood Blvd. between Lindbrook Dr. and Ashton Ave.
  • Intermittent lane reductions on Gayley Ave. between Kinross Ave. and Ashton Ave. 

Utility Surveys and Groundwork Improvement on Sepulveda Blvd. near Wilshire Blvd.

Metro’s contractors will survey the sanitary sewer and storm drain under Sepulveda Blvd. near Wilshire Blvd. in preparation for the Purple Line Extension Section 3. This pre-construction survey will be done using a closed-circuit camera. Contractors will also install magnetic traffic loops and conduct groundwork improvement on Sepulveda Blvd.

Work Hours: Monday through Friday, 9pm to 6am

Traffic Control:

  • Intermittent lane reductions on Sepulveda Blvd. between Constitution Ave. and Ohio Ave.
  • Intermittent lane reductions on Wilshire Blvd. between Bonsall Ave. and Veteran Ave.

Metro Access

During construction, some Metro bus lines could be affected and some bus stops might be relocated.

What to Expect

  • All work has received necessary permits and approvals.
  • Access to driveways, homes & businesses will be maintained at all times unless notified in advance.
  • Access for pedestrians will be maintained outside of construction zones.
  • Access for the Fire Department and emergency responders will be maintained.
  • Temporary lane closures will be required; detours with signage will be implemented.
  • Parking restrictions will be implemented in the immediate area of the work zone.
  • Temporary bus stops with relocation signage will be implemented.
