Westwood/VA Hospital Station Monthly Look-Ahead for April

Summary

This monthly notification is an outline of construction activities for the Westwood/VA Hospital Station for the month of April 2020.

As part of the State, County, and applicable City orders specific to the COVID-19 response, Metro construction activities are currently included as “Essential” activities.  Therefore, construction activities are continuing as permitted by the local jurisdiction. 

Per the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT), there will be relaxed parking enforcement for street sweeping. Parking restrictions in construction work areas will still be enforced.

Additional notices detailing these activities will be sent by email through the Purple Line Extension, Section 3 database. 

Utility Relocation on Wilshire Blvd., Ohio Ave. & Federal Ave.

Metro is coordinating with Southern California Edison to upgrade the electrical system along Wilshire Blvd., Ohio Ave., and Federal Ave. to provide the power necessary for construction and tunneling activities. This upgrade will also provide power for the operations of the future Westwood/VA Hospital Station. 

Work Hours:

Weekdays, Monday through Friday, 7am to 6pm

Weekends, Saturday and Sunday, 8am to 9pm

Weeknights on Wilshire Blvd. only, Monday through Friday, 9pm to 6am

Traffic Controls:

  • Intermittent lane reductions on Wilshire Blvd., Ohio Ave., and Federal Ave.
  • Intermittent turn restrictions on Ohio Ave. between Federal Ave. and Purdue Ave.
  • Intermittent turn restrictions on Federal Ave. between Texas Ave and Ohio Ave.
  • Intermittent traffic restrictions on Colby Ave., Butler Ave. and Purdue Ave. 
  • Temporary parking restrictions in the work area. 

Work Site Preparation on VA Hospital Campus

Metro contractors will continue worksite preparation for the future Westwood/VA Hospital Station. Work includes sound wall installation, well monitoring and other improvement activities to create the staging area for future construction work.

Work Hours: Monday through Friday, 7am to 5pm.

Traffic Controls:

  • This work will have limited impact to local traffic on Wilshire Blvd.
  • Temporary traffic restrictions on campus may be required while construction personnel and equipment enter and exit the work area.
  • Access will be maintained for VA residents, and hospital guests and staff.

Hauling from VA Hospital Campus

Metro contractors will continue hauling supplies and machinery in and out of the VA Hospital Campus.

Haul Hours:

Monday through Friday, 9am to 3:30pm and 9pm to 6am

Saturdays and Sundays, 8am to 9pm and 9pm to 6am

Traffic Controls:

  • Intermittent lane reduction on Wilshire Blvd, just east of Federal Ave.

Utility Surveys on VA Hospital Campus

Metro’s contractors will survey existing underground utilities at the VA Hospital Campus. This pre-construction survey activity will be done on campus at Lot 42, on Bonsall Ave, the Bonsall Ave ramps, and on Wilshire Blvd. This work will require a utility vacuum truck and air compressor that will not impact hospital access.

Work Hours: Monday to Friday only, 6pm to 5am

  • Temporary traffic restrictions may be required while construction personnel and equipment enter and exit the work area.
  • Access will be maintained for VA residents, and hospital guests and staff.
  • Intermittent lane reductions on Wilshire Blvd., Bonsall Ave. and Bonsall Ave. ramps.

Metro Access

During construction, some Metro bus line could be affected and some bus stops might be relocated.

What to Expect

  • All work has received necessary permits and approvals.
  • Access to driveways, homes & businesses will be maintained at all times unless notified in advance.
  • Access for pedestrians will be maintained outside of construction zones.
  • Access for the Fire Department and emergency responders will be maintained.
  • Temporary lane closures will be required; detours with signage will be implemented.
  • Parking restrictions will be implemented in the immediate area of the work zone.
  • Temporary bus stops with relocation signage will be implemented.
