During California Rail Safety Month in September, Metro Hosts a Series of Pop-ups to Remind Everyone That “Safety Begins with You”

Thursday August 29, 2019

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) marks September as California Rail Safety Month, making it the perfect time to remind everyone that “safety begins with you” and to practice safe behavior around Metro trains. Metro will launch its annual rail safety campaign on September 3, focusing on those communities along Metro’s rail system.

Metro’s goal is to increase safe ridership through informative, site-specific safety programs. Rail safety is addressed through comprehensive, ongoing programs that focus on the three E’s of rail safety – Education, Engineering and Enforcement.

Safety presentations are conducted at schools within a half-mile radius of all street-level rail lines including Metro Blue, Expo and Gold lines. Additionally, Metro staff conducts annual safety presentations at senior centers, recreation centers, and other community organizations within a 1.5-mile radius of street-level Metro lines.

Metro reminds all pedestrians, motorists, cyclists and commuters to follow these safety tips near train rails and stations:

  1. Never walk on or around train tracks.
  2. Never go around lowered crossing gates.
  3. Obey all warning signals and devices.
  4. Look and listen for trains in both directions.
  5. Never run to catch the train.

As part of the September Safety Month campaign, Metro will host nineteen pop-up events at some of Metro’s busiest bus and rail stations. The public is invited to stop by to receive safety information and free, limited edition Safetyville themed pins, while supplies last. Please see the attached schedule for dates and locations.
