Metro, Amtrak, Metrolink and Elected Officials to Celebrate Union Station 75th Anniversary and National Train Day with Festivities for the Entire Family and Cultural Events Throughout Downtown Los Angeles

Real and model trains and train memorabilia, vintage rail cars, live entertainment, station tours, bike rides, a Chuggington Kids Depot, the Amtrak Exhibition Train, featuring more than 40 years of history of America's Railroad, and more will be part of the Los Angeles Union Station 75th anniversary celebration and Amtrak's National Train Day festivities, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 3 at Union Station in downtown Los Angeles, 800 N. Alameda St.

New Lightbox Art Display at Union Station Celebrates “The Heart of Los Angeles”

As part of the ongoing restoration of Los Angeles Union Station, new art display space has been added to the passageway that connects Union Station East to Union Station West. The display, partially funded by a federal grant and organized by Metro Art, consists of thirty lightboxes installed along the passageway walls and showcases photographic artwork. The first artworks to be featured celebrate Union Station as "The Heart of Los Angeles" on the occasion of its 75th anniversary.

L.A. Metro Launches New Bike Ad Campaign in time For Bike Week. L.A.

In anticipation of Bike Week L.A. May 12-18, 2014, the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) has launched a brand new bicycle ad campaign entitled "Every Day is a Bike Day" to encourage more Angelinos to bicycle for every day transportation.

Metro Reconfigures Traffic on Crenshaw Boulevard for Underground Station Construction

Major construction will begin Friday, May 2 on Metro Crenshaw/LAX Transit Project starting with underground stations on Crenshaw and Martin Luther King Jr. boulevards with a full street closure to implement a new traffic configuration.

Northbound 405 Freeway Closures Between Wilshire Boulevard and Greenleaf Street Planned Nights of April 28 Through May 2

The I-405 Sepulveda Pass Improvements Project contractor is planning to conduct consecutive nighttime closures of the northbound I-405 between Wilshire Boulevard and Greenleaf Street from midnight to 5 a.m., starting Monday night, April 28 and continuing every night through 5 a.m. on Friday, May 2, 2014. The closure will facilitate permanent striping of general purpose lanes and electrical, drainage, concrete barrier, and k-rail removal work.  Closure information is as follows:

Northbound 405 Daytime Lane Reduction/Nighttime Freeway Closures in West L.A., Sepulveda Pass Planned Weekend of May 2-5

The I-405 Sepulveda Pass Improvements Project contractor is planning to conduct a daytime single lane closure and night-time full closure of the northbound I-405 in West Los Angeles the weekend of  May 2-5, 2014.  The contractor plans to remove and replace roadway, install Church Lane undercrossing expansion dams and approach slabs. The closure schedule is as follows:

Metro Board Approves Continuation of Metro ExpressLanes

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) Board today approved the continuation of the Metro ExpressLanes along the I-110 and I-10 freeways following a successful one-year demonstration period that concluded in February 2014.

Metro Board Awards $927.2 Million Contract to Skanska USA/Traylor Bros. to Design and Build the Regional Connector Transit Corridor Project

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) Board of Directors today approved a $927.2 million contract to Regional Connector Constructors, a joint venture between Skanska USA Civil West California District, Inc. and Traylor Brothers Inc. to design and build the Regional Connector Transit Corridor Project.

Northbound 405 Freeway Closures in the Sepulveda Pass Planned for Four Consecutive Nights April 24-28

The I-405 Sepulveda Pass Improvements Project contractor is planning to close the northbound I-405 in the Sepulveda Pass for four consecutive nights April 24-28.  The closure boundaries and hours change each night. The closures will enable the contractor to install overhead freeway signs.

Northbound 405 Freeway Closure Between I-10 and Santa Monica Boulevard in West L.A. Planned Night of April 23

The I-405 Sepulveda Pass Improvements Project contractor is planning to close the northbound I-405 between the I-10 and Santa Monica Boulevard in West Los Angeles the night of Wednesday, April 23 from midnight to 5 a.m. Thursday, April 24.  The closure will facilitate installation of mainline traffic loops.

Nighttime Wilshire/Sepulveda Intersection Closures Planned April 22 through May 5

The I-405 Sepulveda Pass Improvements Project contractor is planning to close the Wilshire / Sepulveda Boulevard intersection in Westwood nightly for two weeks beginning April 22 to May 5 for needed paving work.

Metro and The Academy Release Home Movie of 1939 Union Station Opening

Only known footage of Union Station opening shot by famed Jiminy Cricket animator

In honor of Union Station's 75th Anniversary May 3, Metro and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, in cooperation with the family of Ward Kimball, have restored and are streaming online the only known footage of the opening of what turned out to be the last great rail station in the United States. The parade, documented in the home movie, drew half a million spectators to downtown Los Angeles. The movie is currently streaming online on The Source at metro.net and at oscars.org/academymuseum/collection.

Update on Release of SR-710 North Study Environmental Documents Announced

Metro today announced that release of the draft environmental impact report/environmental impact statement (EIR/EIS) for the State Route 710 North Study will be delayed. Metro is working with Caltrans on a revised schedule and will make an announcement as soon as it is confirmed.

Free Art Tour with Fallen Fruit on Metro Gold Line Saturday, April 26

In honor of Earth Day, take a ride on the Metro Gold Line and explore public art and neighborhood history with Fallen Fruit on Saturday, April 26. The free, three-hour event begins with a street-side lemonade stand at the entrance to historic Union Station and ends with an installation of self-portraits, created by participants, at the Armory Center for the Arts in Old Pasadena.

Metro Motion Celebrates Union Station 75th Anniversary Stories

In this edition of Metro Motion the focus is on beautiful Los Angeles Union Station, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary May 3. The 1939 opening was an amazing party and half a million spectators turned out to explore the last of the great railway stations and see the parade of bands, floats and massive steam engines.

Metro Freeway Service Patrol Big Rig Program Reaches Milestone Number of Motorist Assists on SR-91

The Metro Freeway Service Patrol (FSP) Big Rig Tow Truck Program is a congestion mitigation program that specifically targets large disabled trucks and semi-tractor trailers. FSP Big Rig currently serves both State Route 91 (SR-91) and Interstate 710 (I-710) in Los Angeles County.  With $1.5 million in financial support from the Mobile Source Air Pollution Reduction Review Committee (MSRC), Metro's FSP Big Rig operations on SR-91 have recently hit a milestone of 10,000 motorist assists as of March 2014.  This falls in line with the MSRC's goals of reducing air pollution from motor vehicles, as well as Metro FSP's goals of keeping traffic lanes moving by quickly clearing incidents from Los Angeles' freeways.
