Center Street between Banning and Commercial Streets: Sidewalk Demolition

A one-day closure on Center Street between Banning and Commercial streets is anticipated for June 12. During the closure, traffic will be routed to an approved detour, shown on the map below. Pedestrian access will be directed by signs along the west side of Center Street. This work is expected to continue weekdays from 7am through 3:30pm through August 2021.
What to Expect
What: Potholing, mass excavation, saw cutting, demolition, trenching, shoring, sidewalk installation, and street restoration. Workers will demolish the east sidewalk and fence along the Division 20 Rail Yard (north of the 1st Street Bridge) on Saturday, June 12 from 8am to 6pm. This work will occur along Center Street between Banning Street and Jackson Street, adjacent to the fenced yard. Construction will include potholing, excavation, saw cutting, concrete demolition, trenching, shoring, and sidewalk and street restoration. Where: Commercial Street north of the 1st Street Bridge.

- Public right of way along Center Street will be impacted during the demolition of the sidewalk and fence.
- Intermittent noise may occur during this activity.
- Traffic detour will only be implemented for one Saturday. Northbound Santa Fe Avenue traffic will be detoured from Banning Street to N. Vignes Street and onto Commercial Street. Southbound Center Street traffic will be routed from Commercial Street to N. Vignes Street and onto Banning Street.

The Division 20 Portal Widening and Turnback Facility Project will enhance the Division 20 Rail Yard to allow for improved service times throughout the Metro Red/Purple Line system.
