Service Changes During the Los Angeles Marathon

Sunday, March 9, 2014

Special Expo Line bus shuttle w/ Santa Monica - Save travel time by riding the free shuttle bus service between the Metro Expo Line and City of Santa Monica.

LA Marathon Service Changes

The Los Angeles Marathon returns on Sunday, March 9 with the "Stadium to the Sea" course running once again from Downtown LA to Santa Monica.

As a result, there will be interruptions in Metro bus service along the route. Lines normally passing through those areas will be rerouted and many other lines will be disrupted.

Metro Rail service will run as scheduled.  Spectators are urged to ride Metro Rail to reach viewing areas and affected bus customers are urged to take Metro Rail to avoid lengthy bus detours and delays.

Go Metro to See the Marathon

Bypass traffic and parking issues and use Metro Rail to support Marathon participants.  Regular, one-way fare is $1.50 per line or $5 All Day Pass. All fares are loaded onto a reusable TAP card ($1), purchasable at any Metro Rail station.  Marathon supporters will see plenty of action from the following Metro Rail stations:

  • Mile 2: Chinatown Station (Gold) or Union Station (Red, Purple, Gold)
  • Mile 3: Little Tokyo/Arts District Station (Gold)
  • Mile 4: Civic Center/Grand Park Station (Red, Purple)
  • Mile 9: Vermont/Sunset Station (Red)
  • Mile 10: Hollywood/Western Station (Red)
  • Mile 11: Hollywood/Vine Station (Red) and Hollywood/Highland Station (Red)
  • Mile 26 (Finish): Culver City Station (Expo) then transfer to free shuttles (info below)

Free Shuttle Between Expo Line and Santa Monica

Metro will run free, non-stop bus shuttles between the City of Santa Monica and Culver City Expo Line Station. Normal fares apply on all other Metro Bus and Rail lines.

  • Shuttles will run continuously between approximately 5am and 6pm.
  • Board Santa Monica-bound buses on Washington Bl, on the east end of Culver City Station.
  • Board Culver City-bound (and all other detoured) buses at temporary "Bus Hub" on Olympic Bl and 11th St in Santa Monica.
  • Santa Monica Big Blue Bus will run free shuttles serving the temporary "Bus Hub" at Olympic/11th, Downtown Santa Monica, and the Marathon Finish Line.  Allow extra time to enter the Finish Line area due to heightened security.

Impact on Trip Planners and NexTrip

Due to technological limitations, short-term, temporary bus detours are not reflected in Google Transit, Metro Trip Planner, or NexTrip real time bus arrivals.

  • Google Transit and Metro's Trip Planner will provide transit directions for regularly scheduled service.  Detours will not be reflected in these results, so be sure to check further below to see if your trip will be affected.
  • NexTrip is unable to make predictions for buses that have detoured away from their normal route because it cannot predict when the bus will return to its normal route.
  • While NexTrip will continue to work normally for most lines and stops, buses that are presently on detour will not show in predictions at stops further down the route until it is back on its normal route.  Further, stops that are only temporarily served by some buses may not show them in results for that stop.  This applies to predictions on our website, via text message, third party apps, and on digital signage that displays real time arrival predictions.
