Tips for a Successful Vanpool
A little planning and common courtesy go a long way to ensuring a successful rideshare arrangement. Here are a few tips and suggestions to operate a successful vanpool. Share this information with everyone on the van:
-
Establish general rules and guidelines that all vanpool riders can agree upon
-
Make sure all riders see themselves as participants of the group
-
Keep and eye and ear out for what is going on within the group. Work to solve problems in the early stages. Hold group meetings regularly or as needed
-
Communicate with riders on your vanpool. Allow everyone to offer suggestions for the continued success of the vanpool
-
Strive to arrive early. Whether you are a driver or a rider, everyone is depending on everyone else to be on time. Every minute the vanpool waits adds stress and uncertainty to those riders trying to make an early morning meeting or afternoon daycare pick-up
-
Elect a person to be the contact for early morning phone calls regarding absences or delays
-
Make sure that the vanpool driver or coordinator is aware of vacation schedules and personal days well in advance. If you will be out due to a sick day or personal emergency, notify your vanpool contact right away, so they will know not to wait for you
-
Make sure there is enough gas in the vehicle for the daily round-trip
-
Don't make detours for personal errands
-
Try to keep your van full to keep fares as low as possible. Ask riders to help recruit new members. Ideas include: placing Metro Vanpool Program Riders Wanted signs on the van, bulletin boards and other visible locations at your worksite; advertise in company newsletters; register your vanpool with local and regional ridematching services by calling 1.800.COMMUTE or contacting your vanpool leasing agency.
