How to protect your balance

If you load a Metro Monthly pass or stored value on your card, TAP gives you the option of signing up for free balance protection. In the event your card is lost or stolen, you can report it and the unused balance will be returned to you. Here’s how:

  1. Fill out a balance protection form online at, or call 1.866.TAPTOGO. You only have to sign up once; your balance will be automatically protected there after.
  2. If your card is lost or stolen, call 1.866.TAPTOGO to report it.
  3. Your original card will be rendered invalid and a new card with the remaining balance will be sent to you. (Please note there is a $5 fee for replacing your card and reinstating your balance.)

If you are a Senior, Disabled or Student rider, you are automatically enrolled in the TAP Balance Protection Program when you apply for your TAP card. No need to do anything more.
