Variety of signage is used for traffic control and safety

The construction team improving the I-405 has been using a variety of signage devices to control traffic and increase worker safety. Here are three frequently used tools. The large message signs, measuring 140 inches wide and 75 inches tall, are used to direct traffic during full freeway closures.

These vehicles, shown at the contractor’s storage yard on Cotner Av, are impact attenuator trucks. They are placed at the beginning of the work area to protect workers from oncoming traffic. The trucks carry arrow boards which flash arrows directing traffic.

Measuring 140 inches wide and 75 inches tall, these portable, changeable message signs, referred to as PCMS devices, are used to direct traffic during full freeway closures.

Ready for night duty, these portable arrow boards also display flashing arrows. The solar-powered boards are used to warn drivers of lane and ramp closures.
