High technology used for pre-construction activities

Recent photographs describe some of the pre-construction activities required as part of the I-405 Sepulveda Pass Improvements Project.

This is the business end of a mobile mapping system that was used to create 3-D images of the I-405 Sepulveda Pass Widening project area.

The laser is so accurate that it provides the precise clearance height of an overcrossing.

The crew uses a vacuum method of exploration rather than the traditional excavation to reduce the chance of disturbing an underground utility.

Before the pothole crew begins working, another team must make transverse cuts across the roadway. In the foreground is a saw used to cut asphalt and concrete. The worker at the left vacuums up mud created by the saw cut operation.
