Dump the Pump Thursday, June 18: Go Metro and Save Nearly $9,000 Per Year

Looking for a way to save big? Join thousands of other frustrated drivers around the country who are leaving their cars at home on National Dump the Pump Day this Thursday, June 18.

During the past 30 days, gas prices in L.A. County rose more than 50 cents a gallon, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California. It's a double whammy for workers already struggling with the effects of uncertain economic times and record joblessness.

National Dump the Pump Day is an opportunity to begin a lifestyle change that could significantly improve personal finances. In L.A. County, those who switch to mass transit can save nearly $9,000 a year, according to The Transit Savings Report, just released by the American Public Transportation Association. That translates to a few months of rent or mortgage, a few months of car payments, a few months of food or maybe all of the above.

Join the people who are choosing to let Metro do the driving … even if it's just for one day. Ridership on Metro rail -- which carries a large percentage of riders who own cars -- remains at near record levels, despite a drop in gas prices from last summer's all time highs. This indicates that in L.A. County, people who turn to transit as an alternate way to commute, stick with it. Whether for cost, comfort or convenience, that's a strong endorsement for change.

You can also save big by sharing the ride. Metro can connect you to a vanpool that works with your neighborhood and schedule. Go to metro.net/vanpool or call 1-800-COMMUTE to find out how.
