MTA
Board Approves Nominations for Members to Serve on the Metro South Bay
Sector Governance Council The
MTA Board of Directors today approved the selection of seven individuals
to serve on the governance council for the Metro South Bay Service Sector. Those
individuals selected were nominated by various cities within the South Bay
Service Sector and approved in November by the South Bay Cities Council of
Governments. “MTA
remains committed to improving the overall operation of our bus service
and the creation of community-based governance councils will provide the
direction needed to provide quality service to our customers,” said MTA
Board Chairman Hal Bernson. The
MTA Board of Directors earlier this year approved the creation of
individual governance councils to provide local control over the service
sectors. In developing the guidelines for the councils, the Board approved
a policy where up to nine members can serve on a governance council. A
total of five community-based bus transit service sectors are now fully
operational. They include the Metro South Bay Service Sector, The Gateway
Cities Service Sector in the southeast portion of Los Angeles, The Metro
Central/Westside Service Sector, the Metro San Gabriel Valley Service
Sector and the Metro San Fernando Valley Service Sector. Each
sector is headed up by a general manager and support staff with offices
located in the communities they serve. The Metro South Bay Service Sector
office is located in Torrance at 680 Knox Street, Suite 150 and can be
reached by calling (310) 225-6000. The
South Bay Service Sector General Manager is Dana Coffey, a 26-year veteran
of the MTA who served as a transportation division manager for MTA’s bus
operating division in Carson. Under
her leadership and direction from the newly created governance council,
the South Bay sector is responsible for two operating divisions located in
South Central Los Angeles and Carson with approximately 530 buses plus 48
contacted buses operating on 37 bus lines carrying 93.4 million annual
boarding passengers. Approved
to sit on the Metro South Bay Service Sector governance council are Curren
Price, Inglewood City Councilman; John McTaggart, Rancho Palos Verdes City
Councilman and Mayor; Jim Hendrickson, city manager, Palos Verdes Estates;
Teresa Price, Redondo Beach transit manager; Lou Mitchell, president,
Watts ACORN, a nonprofit community group; Margaret Hudson, member of the
Carson Public Safety Commission; and Howard Sachar, a member of MTA’s
Citizens Advisory Committee. MTA-116 |
