MTA Board Names Pico Metro Blue Line
Station after Legendary Broadcaster Chick Hearn The MTA Board of Directors today
designated the Pico station of the Long Beach to Los Angeles Metro Blue
Line as the “Chick Hearn” station. Los Angeles Mayor and MTA Board member
James Hahn made the motion at today’s Board meeting. He credited Chick
Hearn for being the voice of the Los Angeles Lakers for more than four
decades, broadcasting 3,338 consecutive games. Chick Hearn, born Francis
Dayle Hearn, died Aug. 2, 2002. In his motion before the MTA Board of
Directors Mayor Hahn noted “By virtue of his announcing abilities, Chick
Hearn was able to transport fans to courtside seats of the Los Angeles
Lakers’ games by radio over 40 years. Chick Hearn was more than an
announcer. He was a pioneer, and innovator, a promoter, a friend, a father
and a husband. He will be sorely missed” In honor of the achievements of Chick
Hearn and his contributions to the game of basketball, the MTA Board
instructed MTA staff to immediately establish and properly designate the
Pico station of the Metro Blue Line as the “Chick Hearn” station. The Metro Blue Line runs 22 miles between
downtown Los Angeles and Long Beach. The Pico Station, located at Pico and
Flower in downtown Los Angeles, provides easy access for sports fans to
the Staples Center. MTA-089 |
