FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

New Canoga Station, Park & Ride Lot Opens on Western Terminus of Metro Orange Line

  • Transitway extended one-third mile to Canoga Park, features 611-space free park & ride facility

Officials today celebrated the official opening of the new Metro Orange Line Canoga Station and park & ride facility in Canoga Park that now provides much needed parking for West Valley transit commuters.

The project, constructed by Sully-Miller Contracting Company, is a one-third mile extension of the popular transitway from Variel Avenue to Canoga Avenue, and includes a full-featured station with artwork, 611 free park & ride spaces, pedestrian and bicycle paths and landscaping.

“The opening of this new station is our holiday gift for Valley commuters,” said Zev Yaroslavsky, Chairman of the Board of Supervisors and Metro Board member. “Canoga Station now provides more West Valley commuters with a viable alternative to the congested Ventura Freeway. This station will be the launch point for future extensions that will make this transit line even better.”

Canoga Station is the 14th station on the cross-valley transitway, which connects the Metro Red Line in North Hollywood with Warner Center in Woodland Hills. The station has convenience entrances from Canoga Avenue and Vanowen Street. It is the sixth park & ride lot on the line. The closest park & ride location on the western end of the line is Pierce College Station, with 394 spaces. The new total of available parking spaces in these lots is now more than 3,800 spaces.

“The Metro Orange Line has proven to be one of our most popular transit services, and this new station will make it even more attractive for people to choose the convenience of Metro Liner Buses over driving in the Valley,” said Roger Snoble, Metro CEO.

Including the 6.5-acre Canoga station, extension of the transitway and extension of the multi-use bike and pedestrian path, the project budget totaled $26 million.

In common with the other Orange Line stations, the Canoga station includes both an east-bound and a west-bound platform. Each platform features four canopies, sheltering passengers from sun and rain. Stations also include emergency telephones, lighting, real-time electronic signage, artwork, seating, system and neighborhood maps, security cameras and ticket vending machines.

The Canoga Park station will also be the launch point for future transitway extensions now under review by Metro. In September 2006, the Metro Board approved commencement of environmental clearances and preliminary engineering for a six-mile extension of the service from the Canoga station north to the MetroLink station in Chatsworth. Consultant proposals to perform this work were received on Dec. 21, 2006 and are now being evaluated.

The Canoga Station contains terrazo paving areas and art panels entitled “Constructed Histories” by artist Roy Dowell.

The Metro Orange Line, called a train on rubber tires, runs 60-foot articulated buses on a dedicated right-of-way that parallels the congested Ventura Freeway and links the communities of North Hollywood, Valley Village, Valley Glen, Van Nuys, Tarzana, Winnetka and Woodland Hills.
