The Metro Gold Line Eastside Construction Project begins work on the East Portal Tunnel

Friday May 06, 2005

The Metro Gold Line Eastside Extension construction project will begin widening First Street, between Fresno and Cheesbroughs Streets, on Monday, May 9 as part of the construction of the East Portal, which will provide space for the light rail system tunnel.

The widening itself will involve the construction of a new retaining wall for the property containing the Los Angeles Crematorium, new sidewalks and new traffic lanes. The work in this area will be for an extended period of time. Construction of the East Portal, involving soldier piling, excavation and concrete works, will follow.

First Street will remain open to traffic, but there will be temporary lane closures with traffic diverted either to the south or north. The current jogging path and sidewalk along the north side of First Street will be closed during construction of the new retaining wall and sidewalk on the north side and there will be some redirection of pedestrians and joggers in and around this area. All re-routing will comply with LADOT standards.
