BUS OPERATOR
Trainee Rate: $11.09 per hour
Start Rate: $14.38 per hour

Position
Under close
supervision, operates public transit buses.
Memorizes routes, transfer points, and fare structures for all lines in
assigned divisions; performs a complete pre-pull-out inspection of bus, safety
checks of equipment; refers to and implements route maps, time schedules, and
instructions for pull-outs, line service, pull-ins, and off route trips;
provides schedule, route, and fare information to passengers seeking
assistance; operates wheelchair lift and assists handicapped passengers in
boarding, riding, and alighting in a safe manner; reports hazardous or
dangerous conditions along bus route and at passenger loading zones, including
such hazards as unusual traffic, road conditions, obstructions, construction,
and potential criminal activity; writes reports and completes forms; adheres to
safety rules, regulations, policies, and procedures to ensure the well being of
Metro customers, employees, and business partners; responsible for maintaining,
supporting, and promoting a safe work environment while complying with all of
Metro's safety rules, policies, and procedures; and
performs other related duties.
Positions in this job classification are considered safety sensitive
and subject to drug and alcohol testing, including random testing, under
Federal Transportation Administration (FTA) drug and alcohol regulations.
Requirements for Employment
Must be at least 21 years of age and
have at least six months of full-time public contact or customer service
experience.
Must
have a valid California Class C driver’s license and a good driving record for
the past five years. Must
have been a licensed driver for at least two years. Must be able to obtain a Class B-P Permit
or B-P License. Must have a
satisfactory attendance and work performance record as verified by reference
check prior to offer of employment.
Knowledge: State and local traffic laws, ordinances, and
regulations involved in the operation of vehicles; vehicle safety rules and
regulations; and basic money and time concepts.
Abilities: Operate Metro vehicles
and equipment safely and efficiently; communicate courteously and effectively
with people; and speak, read, and write basic English.
