Bike Metro

Overview

Bike Lockers

Bike Metro wants to support your trip and help get you to your destination. You'll be able to go further with your bike when combining your trip with Metro Rail and bus. Whether it's using the bike rack on the bus, bringing your bike on a train, or parking your bike at a Metro station, we have many solutions to assist you on your trip. But first, please take some time to learn the bike rules when using Metro.

Please refer to our Pocket Guide for instructions and rules for taking your bike on Metro Bus or Rail; locations on bicycle parking; and information on bicycle laws, safety tips, and other tips to assist you in using your bike.

Bike Lockers

If your bike is accidentally left on the bus, please visit our Lost & Found online system to report your lost or stolen bike. You can also visit the Wilshire/ La Brea Customer Center.  They are located at 5301 Wilshire Bl (at La Brea) and open between Monday - Saturday from 9am - 5pm.

Bikes on Rail

Now you can take your bike on Metro Rail anytime, in any direction, as space allows. See "Bike Rules" tab for more information.

Bike Racks on Buses

Bicycle racks are available first-come, first-serve on Metro buses. Information is also available on how to utilize the bike racks available on Metro buses.

Bike Parking

Bicycle racks and lockers can be found at many of our stations throughout the system. Refer to our Bike Parking Accordion for more information.

Bike Rules

Bikes on Rail

Bike Sign

Bikes are permitted on Metro rail trains at all times.

Please follow these guidelines:

On Red/Purple Lines:  Enter at doors marked with this symbol.  Then, look for the designated open area to accommodate bikes and other large items at the end of the car.  Stand with your bike in this area.

On Blue Line:  Please stand with your bike in an available area at either end of the rail car.  Exception:  Bikes are not permitted in front of the operator’s door in the lead car.

On Green and Gold Lines:  Please stand with your bike in the designated area marked with this symbol.  Metro will be adding open areas for bikes in these cars in the future.

Note:  Frequency of rail service will increase as seats are removed, to better accommodate those with bikes and all other riders.

For everyone’s safety, please use the elevators or stairs when entering or exiting stations with a bike.  Do not use escalators.

Be sure not to block doors or aisles on the trains.

 Bike Rules

  • If an arriving train is full, please wait for the next train.  Never force your bike into a crowded train.
  • If you have a folding bike, make sure it is properly folded.
  • Allow other passengers to exit and enter the train before boarding.
  • While on a train, you must hold onto the bike and kickstand must always be up.
  • Your bike must not block the train operator's door, aisle ways or train doors.
  • Give priority to wheelchair passengers in designated areas.
  • In an evacuation, leave your bike on the train; do not let it block aisles or doors.
  • You cannot ride a bike or other wheeled device on the platform or in the station; walk with your bike.
  • Recumbent bikes must be under 6 feet.
  • Bikes not permitted:  Scooters, tandem, 3-wheeled, fuel-powered, and bike trailers (also no infant or child trailers).
  • Bicyclists under 14 years old must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Failure to obey these rules may result in a citation; ref. PC 640 (b) (9) (A)

Bikes on Buses

Bike Rules

  • All Metro Buses are equipped with bike racks that hold two bikes. If the rack is full, please wait for the next bus.
  • Be prepared at the bus stop and remove loose unsecured items (i.e. bags and helmets) and take them with you onto the bus.
  • You are responsible for loading, securing and unloading your bicycle from the rack.
  • Never step into traffic while loading or unloading your bike.
  • Never cross in front of the bus to enter the street - passing traffic cannot see you coming around the bus.
  • If an object rolls under the bus, never try to retrieve it. Tell the operator and wait for the bus to pull away, then retrieve it.
  • Before you reach your stop let the bus operator know you will be retrieving your bike from the rack.
  • Tandem bikes or bikes with motors, solid wheels, large racks, child seats or other attachments are not allowed.
  • Folding bike can be taken on the bus. Make sure the bike is properly folded.

About the Bikeway

Metro Orange Line Bikeway The Metro Orange Line is a transitway built especially for Metro Liner vehicles. Adjacent bicycle and pedestrian facilities provide a truly integrated transportation experience. Connecting to stations by bicycle saves you money on gasoline and wear and tear on your car. You can use the bicycle parking available at each station or take your bike on the bus.

At the western end of the line, from Canoga, cyclists will be riding along regular city streets and sidewalks to the Warner Center area. Eastbound, most of the route is an off-street bike path until the Valley Village area. At Chandler, the bike path becomes on-street bike lanes to the North Hollywood Station.

Bicycle Roundtable

Metro’s Bicycle Roundtable marks the beginning of a new relationship we would like to foster with the cycling community. These Roundtable meetings are intended to develop a dialogue to identify issues of importance to cyclists.

We’ve heard very specific requests from the bicycle community, and in order to process, prioritize, and respond to those requests we are forming the following Subcommittees:

  • Policy and Planning will focus on bicycle funding, bike parking, legislative issues, long range planning, strategic planning, and joint development policies.
  • Implementation will focus on design guidelines for new station planning and communications.
  • Operations will focus on Metro bus and rail facilities.

The role of the Subcommittees is to offer and consider ideas, and provide informed feedback to Metro departments. The comments received at the first Roundtable meeting were consolidated into three “themes.” Please let Jennifer Gill know which subcommittee(s) you would like to be involved in, Jennifer Gill at gillj@metro.net or 213.922.4224. Discussions at Subcommittees focuses on these top priorities. We encourage you to participate in as many Subcommittees as you would like.
