Metro Customer Service Centers
In 1998 the interiors of three Metro Customer Service Centers were dramatically enhanced with colorful public artworks created by local students under the leadership of professional artists. These projects help make the experience of purchasing transit passes or picking up schedules a pleasant one.
While each of the projects centers around the theme of transportation, each is markedly different. The students interviewed Metro customers and staff before developing their projects and were given a guided tour of public artworks in the Metro Rail system.
At the East Los Angeles Metro Customer Service Center students from Woodrow Wilson High School (led by artist Cindy Maguire) created a work entitled Living in LA. The students incorporated actual historical transit tokens into the work. The tokens are collaged into a nine panel series of abstracted transit-related images.
At the Wilshire Boulevard Metro Customer Service Center students from Annandale Elementary School (led by artist Terry Lenihan) created a work entitled Our City. Large brightly colored cutouts of buildings, people, rail cars and buses enliven the space.
At the Baldwin Hills Metro Customer Service Center students led by artist George Evans created a work entitled Views of Los Angeles that includes images of the Leimert Park area and other LA landmarks accessible by public transportation.
