Local University Public Policy Programs
UCLA School of Public Policy and Social Research - The School of Public Policy and Social Research was established in 1994 to set a new direction for policy education, research and action. Although it is one of the country's newest policy programs, the School is also one of the largest, incorporating two longstanding UCLA units -- the departments of Social Welfare and Urban Planning -- with a new Department of Policy Studies. The School houses several active research centers: the Center for Communication Policy; the Center for Health Policy Research; the Lewis Center for Regional Policy Studies; the North American Integration and Development Center; the Institute of Transportation Studies; the Center for Policy Research on Aging; the Center for International Science, Technology and Cultural Policy; and the Center for Globalization and Policy Research.
Claremont Graduate University - Claremont's Public Policy program, located in its School of Politics and Economics, is particularly strong on urban issues. Faculty members have done research on the impact of local election laws on minority groups, the decision of cities to pursue federal funds for community policing, and the use of location incentives to attract new businesses.
University of Southern California School of Policy, Planning, and Development (SPPD) - The School of Policy, Planning, and Development offers a variety of social science programs, including public policy, social and urban policy, and transportation policy and planning. The School is affiliated with several research centers whose members have done work in transportation, urban policy and government. Of note are the Center for Philanthropy and Public Policy and the Center for Economic Development.
Edmund G. "Pat" Brown Institute of Public Affairs - The Edmund G. "Pat" Brown Institute of Public Affairs is a non-profit, non-partisan center for applied public policy and community engagement located on the campus of California State University, Los Angeles since 1987. The Institute collaborates with community organizations, public officials, business and labor, and schools and universities to offer programs on community development and family.
