California:

California Geospatial Information Library State of California Spatial Information Library with a comprehensive series of GIS-related web pages to provide information on State government GIS activities, access to statewide GIS data, and links to the larger California GIS community.

California Geographic Information Association As a partner organization with the Federal Geographic Data Committee, CGIA is working to define and develop California's portion of the National Spatial Data Infrastructure. The CGIA was formed in 1994 based on a recommendation put forth in the Report of the Geographic Information Task Force. Since its inception, CGIA has been active in its mission "To Promote the Effective Use of Geographic Information in the State of California." CGIA lead the initiative for the Strategic Geographic Information Investment Act, actively promoting AB 1293 and AB 3431 in the California legislature.

California Geographical Survey California Geographical Survey a resource of the Department of Geography at California State University, Northridge.

California Environmental Resources Evaluation System CERES is an information system developed by the California Resources Agency to facilitate access to a variety of electronic data describing California's rich and diverse environments. The goal of CERES is to improve environmental analysis and planning by integrating natural and cultural resource information from multiple contributors and by making it available and useful to a wide variety of users. Center for Spatial Analysis and Remote Sensing The Center aims to support and foster an applied research environment with a focus on the advancement of curriculum development and course delivery on Geographic Information Systems at California State University, Los Angeles.  Furthermore, the Center attempts to develop cooperative relationships between the University and local public agencies, community organizations and private businesses. As a service to the community, the Center provides access to GIS-ready census information for the state. San Diego Association of Governments SANDAG has a well recognized and award winning Geographic Information System (GIS) program. Having used GIS technology since the early 1970s, they continue to pioneer innovative approaches to GIS database development, maintenance, analysis, and display. GIS is used in a variety of applications, including demography, transportation, land use, environment, public safety, and public facility siting and management.

National:

Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS)/National Transportation Library The Bureau of Transportation Statistics provides online resources and free CD's with spatial data ready for GIS; including data on aviation, the environment, passenger travel and safety. The National Transportation Atlas Database provides area databases in conjunction with transportation networks and other facilities to provide a locational frame of reference or a container for demographic or environmental information. Attributes associated with background databases include feature or place name, area measures, and census data aggregated to the area level. The Mapping Center provides mapping and data download applications that can be used to geographically analyze and retrieve data in the TranStats Data Library.  It provides access, through a map based download interface, to all transportation geospatial data collected and maintained by the USDOT.

Census Data Schedule of GIS product releases, guides to using data, maps, data sets.  You can query various census files both 1990 and 2000.  A ton of data and resources.

EPA National Spatial Data Clearinghouse Datasets are organized under the themes of air, water, and transportation and include TIGER (Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Reference System) boundary information.

Federal Geospatial Data Clearinghouse Search Engine The Geospatial Data Clearinghouse is a collection of over 100 spatial data servers, that have digital geographic data primarily for use in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), image processing systems, and other modelling software. These data collections can be searched through a single interface based on their descriptions, or "metadata."

GeoData.gov - U.S. Maps and Data
Geographic Names Information System The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) contains information about almost 2 million physical and cultural geographic features in the United States. The Federally recognized name of each feature described in the data base is identified, and references are made to a feature's location by State, county, and geographic coordinates.

National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) Formerly known as the Nationwide Personal Transportation Survey (NPTS) and the American Travel Survey (ATS), the NHTS is a household-based travel survey conducted every five years by the U.S. Department of Transportation. Survey data are collected from a sample of U.S. households and expanded to provide national estimates of trips and miles by travel mode, purpose, and a host of other characteristics. The survey collects information on daily, local trips and on long-distance travel in the United States.

TIGER Database The U.S. Government's coast to coast digital database for current census data. 2000 Tiger/Line Files are a digital database of geographic features, such as roads, railroads, rivers, lakes, political boundaries, census statistical boundaries, etc. covering the entire United States. The data base contains information about these features such as their location in latitude and longitude, the name, the type of feature, address ranges for most streets, the geographic relationship to other features, and other related information. They are the public product created from the Census Bureau's TIGER® (Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing) data base of geographic information.
