Transit Education Programs

1. Is there a cost for having a safety presentation or tour for my group?

There is no cost for the safety presentations or tours. The programs are free.

2. If my group wants a safety presentation or tour, what do I need to do first?

Contact Dixie Pattison, Transit Education Programs, at 213.922.4050 or pattisond@metro.net to submit your request for a safety presentation or tour.

3. How far in advance do I need to schedule a presentation or tour?

You need to contact Transit Education Programs at least three (3) weeks in advance of the date you would like the presentation or tour.

Safety Presentations

1. Do we need to have a minimum number of people in the audience for the safety presentation?

Ideally, we would like to have at least 15-20 people at the presentation but we can accommodate smaller or larger groups.

2. What does our site need to provide for the safety presentation?

The only items we request are: projection screen (or large white wall), small table, and electrical outlet. Transit Education Programs brings all of the equipment for the presentation (including heavy duty extension cords and power strip). Please note: for large school assemblies, it’s more effective if we can plug into the school’s sound system.

Tours

1. Is there a maximum number of participants for the tour?

The maximum number of participants on a tour is 50. Schools and groups which include children younger than 18 years of age must provide one teacher, parent or chaperone for every 10 children.

2. When are tours available?

Tours are conducted Monday – Friday from 8 am until 3 pm

Metro Rail

1. How far underground are the subways located?

The subways—the Metro Red and Purple lines — are located 900 feet underground.

2. How long does it take for train to stop?

Once the train operator presses on the brake, it takes the length of two (2) football fields for the train to come to a complete stop. That’s a total of 200 yards (or 600 feet.)

3. Why can’t you eat or drink on the train or at the platform?

It’s important that we all do our part to keep our Metro trains and stations nice and clean. Therefore, there is no eating or drinking allowed on the train or on the station platform.

4. Which Metro train travels the fastest?

Metro's subway trains, the Purple and Red Lines, have top speeds of up to 70 mph.

5. How many miles is the Metro Blue Line? How many stations does it have?

The Metro Blue Line is 22 miles long and has 22 stations.

6. How many miles is the Metro Green Line? How many stations does it have?

The Metro Green Line is 20 miles long and has 14 stations.

7. How many miles is the Metro Red and Purple lines? How many stations do they have?

Combined, the Metro Red and Purple Lines are over 17 miles long. The Purple Line has 8 stations and the Red Line has 14 stations.

8. How many miles is the Metro Gold Line? How many stations does it have?

The Metro Gold Line is about 20 miles long and has 21 stations.

Metro Bus

1. What kind of fuel do Metro’s buses use?

Almost all of the Metro buses are powered by compressed natural gas (CNG.) This clean, alternative fuel helps Metro’s buses reduce air pollution by more than 152,000 pounds each day. The CNG buses are 97% cleaner than the diesel-powered buses they replaced.

2. How many buses are in Metro’s bus fleet?

Currently, Metro has over 2,600 buses in its fleet.

3. How many people ride Metro Buses during the weekday?

Each day, from Monday through Friday, there are over 1.1 million people who ride Metro buses.

4. Can I take my bike with me on a Metro Bus?

Yes. Most Metro Buses have special bike racks on the front of the bus. There is enough room for two bikes. Learn how to safely put your bike on the rack. 5. What if the bike rack is already full—can I take my bike with me on the bus?

No. If the bike rack is already full, you’ll have to wait for the next bus that has an empty bike rack.

6. How many Metro Bus Stops are there throughout Los Angeles County?

There are almost 16,000 bus stops.

7. Can I eat or drink inside a Metro Bus?

No, there is no eating or drinking inside Metro Buses. There is also no smoking or loud or rowdy behavior.

8. How is the Metro Rapid Bus different from the Metro Local Bus?

The Metro Rapid has special features to provide fast and frequent bus service to our customers. The system uses new technology that gives priority to Metro Rapid Buses at traffic signals—green lights stay on longer and red lights are shorter. Although Metro Rapid has fewer bus stops, it arrives as often as every 3-10 minutes during rush hour. The buses also have low-floors that make it easier and faster for passengers to get on and off the bus.

9. If I pay cash when I ride the bus, will the bus operator give me change?

No. You will need to have exact change.

10. Can children ride the bus free?

Two children under 5 years old may travel free on the bus or train with each adult who pays their own fare.
